03/30/2006PowerBook vs. Mac mini -- a Zope 3 benchmarkA couple of weeks ago my mom's and dad's computer broke down. It's an
iMac G3 400. You know, one of those old coloury things. In fact,
this one's green (I think Apple called it lime.) Probably five
years ago we bought this machine used off of eBay. At the time, it
was perhaps two years old, perhaps a little more. Given excellent
Linux support on the G3 Mac family (I used to happily run ...

03/23/2006Goodbye, Shanghai
Fugir pra bem longe e outro lugar
Sempre é pensar
De evitar de esquecer
My last day in Shanghai has come. My bags are packed, lots
of junk sent home via parcel and now I'm just waiting to get on the
maglev for the last time. I should be excited to go home. But I'm
surprisingly not. I don't want to go! But I have to.
Though at least I'm going with lots of ...

03/21/2006Martijn Faassen and Stefan Behnel release lxml 0.9Kudos to Martijn
Faassen and
Stefan Behnel for releasing lxml
0.9! In case you don't know what lxml is: it provides an ElementTree API for
libxml/libxslt and is probably the only
sane Python bindings for these insanely fast XML processing libraries. This
release took them nearly five months, but it also has a ton of new features,
mostly contributed by Stefan. My highlights ...

03/16/2006My Zope 3.3 wishlistWe got a month and a half left till the feature freeze for Zope 3.3.
Here's my wishlist of things that I'd really like to see happen in
this release:
Egg support.
This doesn't necessarily mean that Zope 3 itself will be packed up
as eggs (or "egg salad" as we called it in Dallas, since each
package in the zope namespace would be its own egg). This
"just" means that ...
03/10/2006Death to ZopeTestCase! There's a beast in Zope 2 that needs to die. Its name is
ZopeTestCase.
Integration tests are good
I won't condemn ZopeTestCase entirely. It actually serves a good
purpose: to test how a particular Zope 2 object (a Zope 2 meta type, a
CMF portal tool, a content object, etc.) behaves in a Zope 2-like
environment, which essentially means inside a folder hierarchy with
acquisition and all ...

03/08/2006Birthday!
In case you're wondering, the place I live at is called 五牛城 which basically translates to Five Bull City (there
are actually five golden bulls in front of the building). Since that sounds
stupid in English, they call it Pent-Ox (πεντε means
five in Greek). Jendrik
and I just like to call it the Penthouse.
So, see you ...

03/07/2006PyCON 2006 Sprint RecapA while back, it was suggested to me to participate in the PyCON 2006
sprints so that I could work with Jim Fulton and Tres Seaver on
improving the story of local component customization. PyCON was
definitely going to be a good opportunity to meet in person for a
whole week, so I presented this idea to a couple of companies in the
Zope community. The following companies were kind of enough ...
